Alternative New Year's Goal
Jan 09, 2023Do you have high expectations of yourself every January? You are not alone!
If you are anything like me - each year starts with an expectation that I will be "better" or more successful in all endeavors every year.
This is my small reminder to myself that rinse and repeat are also available, as is, doing less.
If you have been following me for any length of time you will know that one of my favorite game changers is doing "B-minus Work". That goes for my charting, my laundry, my inbox, and my housework.
Good enough is good enough.
If you have perfectionist or people-pleasing tendencies (that's most physicians and healthcare professionals) then this is a very difficult skill to master. The art of good enough.
I am including myself! I was definitely the A+ seeker, looking for appreciation of a job well done - at home and in all my pursuits.
However, I realized, as you may have, that A+ work is rarely recognized any differently than B-minus work in the day-to-day. In addition, the energy and time required to achieve that A+ level of achievement will wear you out quickly.
I encourage you to look for ways to preserve your energy.
Another example of saving energy is delegation. This includes some of those home tasks that you do "because it's easy" or "because they don't know how to do it and it will take too long to teach them".
Whether at work or at home, in the delegation department: everyone you delegate tasks to is only capable of maybe 75% of the standard of work that you do.
So if you want to.... take a deep breath and lower your expectations 🤣❤️😍😉😝😁
Within our household, we taught our sons to do their own laundry including bedsheets by the age of 10. They were responsible for their bathroom cleaning. They had the responsibility of making supper for the family one night a week from age 12 and once they could drive they got a credit card that was linked to our account and were tasked with doing the weekly food shopping a number of times each year.
One of my colleagues called this "child labor" 🤣😆 but it was actually both delegation and teaching valuable life skills for my children to live independently.
Yes, goals are allowed and yes, we are definitely still aiming for sustainable clinical days. 😁 For me this means, more fun, less dread, and better systems and processes that help me and my colleagues stay in our zones of genius and do fewer non-physician/non-clinician tasks.
We continue to work together towards our goals inside the program with the valuable community of your peers who encourage you towards your goals and the coaching calls and guest experts to give you specific help.
